Insidious: Out of the Further holds 109 Malaysian cinemas as the franchise passes $800 million

The Philippines gave Insidious: Out of the Further the second-biggest horror opening in its history, and Malaysia is treating the film the same way. It opened here on 20 August, a day before its American release, and two weeks on it is still at 109 cinemas, according to this site's listings for 3 to 9 September, with 1,230 sessions across all seven chains. Only Chelot is at more cinemas this week, and the two films could not be more different: a Malaysian action thriller rated 16, and the sixth film in an American horror series, also rated 16, running 105 minutes in the chains' listings.

$60.3 million in a weekend

Screen Daily's Charles Gant reported on 24 August that the film opened to $60.3 million worldwide, $25.3 million of it in North America and $35 million from international markets. Mexico led those with $4.2 million, and the Philippines, with $4 million, recorded what Screen Daily calls the second-highest horror opening the market has ever had. The United Kingdom and Ireland gave it $3.1 million, and France and Indonesia $1.7 million each. Screen Daily also put the whole series past $800 million across its six films, with the previous entry, The Red Door, having finished on $189.1 million worldwide.

Box Office Mojo's release page, as of 3 September, has the North American opening at $25,106,020 from 3,303 theatres, a domestic total of $45.9 million, an international total of $66.6 million and a worldwide total of $112.5 million. The page lists Sony Pictures Releasing as distributor, a running time of 1 hour 46 minutes and an American PG-13 rating; Malaysia's classification is 16.

Why the Philippine number matters here

That figure is the one for a Malaysian reader. Horror franchises have long done disproportionately well in Southeast Asia relative to their American numbers, and the chains here have programmed Out of the Further accordingly: it has kept sessions at 109 cinemas into a third week when a comparable American release would often have dropped to half that. Nearly nine of every ten cinemas listed here, in week three, is what a regional hit looks like from the listings.

This week's sessions include TGV's Beanieplex and Indulge halls and its large-format Infinity hall, as well as the smaller chains' standard halls, and the late sessions run past midnight at the city cinemas.
