Kudrat 1968: High Council reaches cinemas on 29 September, a week after its series went to No. 1 on Netflix Malaysia

The story that is No. 1 on Netflix Malaysia this week finishes in a cinema. Kudrat 1968: High Council is listed on this site for Tuesday 29 September at Paragon and TGV, and the four-episode series that opens the same story went to the top of Netflix Malaysia's chart with only two episodes released, Malay Mail reported on 18 September. When Malay Mail covered the series launch on 4 September, the cinema date had not been announced; the chains' listings now carry it.

One story, two formats

Malay Mail has followed the project since August, when Astro Shaw revealed the six leads at Robert's Theatre in Ampang. The pitch, in the paper's words, is one story told across a series and a film, which the production calls a first for Malaysia: four Astro Originals episodes, released from 11 September on Astro's platforms and Netflix, establish the world and the characters before the feature film carries the story to its end. Rather than two adaptations of one idea, the series and the film are meant as consecutive chapters.

The setting is Kolej Ungku Deramat, the KUDRAT of the title, decades before the events of Projek: High Council. Malay Mail's account of the plot is a student pushed into an institution built on his father's name, who has to decide whether to defend the system that made him or tear it down. Raja Jastina Raja Arshad, head of Astro Shaw and the project's executive producer, told the paper the story is about the divide between social classes within a system, and she hoped it would make room for reflection on how such systems shape identity and choices.

Who is in it

The six leads announced in August are Mierul Aiman as Kuda, or Tengku Uda Tengku Ali, a new role for the actor who played Fakhri in the original series; Zarif Ghazzi as Abbas; Dai Fuad as Pa; Chech Harith as Mazli; Akmal Asyraf as Piji; and Evertts Gomes as Ghafar. The September announcement added Zamarul Hisham, Nabila Huda, Datuk Seri Eizlan Yusof, Aziz M. Osman, Aleza Shadan, Yasmin Hani, Rusdi Ramli and others. Zulaikha Zakaria, a writer and co-director on the original series, directs with Khairi Asyraff, and the two are the showrunners; the chains' listing credits Anwari Ashraf, who made the 2023 series. Astro Shaw leads the production with ZAK Capital, Enotech Pictures, Pegasus Motion Pictures and HM Entertainment.

Why the chart matters

Projek: High Council was, by Malay Mail's account, Astro's all-time No. 1 on-demand show, with more than a billion views across social media, and it has already produced one cinema prequel, Kahar: Kapla High Council in 2024. Kosmo reported on 19 September that the new series had barely begun before viewers were building theories connecting its characters to Abu Yamin, Ungku Deramat, Beja, Kahar and Harun Jasni from the earlier stories, with some rewatching the older series to fix the chronology, and singled out Zarif Ghazzi and Chech Harith for praise. A film that opens on a Tuesday, with an audience that has already watched four episodes and argued about them online, is a different proposition from a cold release.

Before it opens

The practical order is the one the production intends: the four episodes first, then the film. The chains' listing gives it in Malay with Zarif Ghazzi, Mierul Aiman, Dai Fuad, Chech Harith, Akmal Asyraf and Evertts Gomes, and no classification or running time yet; both will appear here when the chains publish them. Only Paragon and TGV have announced it so far, which usually means the other chains follow in the week before opening.
