Meesaya Murukku 2 showtimes: Hiphop Tamizha's sequel is at 43 Malaysian cinemas, led by FST and GSC

The cinema with the most sessions of Meesaya Murukku 2 this week is not in a Kuala Lumpur mall. It is TSR Cinemax in Shah Alam, which has 54 sessions of Hiphop Tamizha Adhi's new film this week, 37 of them in its Atmos hall. The film opened on Friday 25 September, and this site's listings, which run to Wednesday 30 September, have it at 43 cinemas with 677 sessions across eight chains.

The sequel to Adhi's 2017 debut

GSC's listing describes the film as the follow-up to Meesaya Murukku, the 2017 film that was Adhi's first as a director, and credits him as both director and star, with Ketika Sharma, Chaithra J. Achar and Yogi Babu in the cast. TGV's synopsis follows Jeeva, who after a rejection in love and a fight comes to understand what his father, Siva, struggled with and gave up, takes heart from his grandfather's legacy, and works at his music until the industry takes notice and his family is proud of him. GSC sums it up as hustle, romance and music-making, mixing big musical numbers with emotional drama. It is rated 13, in Tamil with English subtitles, and runs 138 minutes by GSC's listing and 140 by TGV's.

30,000 fans at Merdeka Stadium in January

The film arrives with its maker's Malaysian following well measured. Bernama reported that Hip Hop Tamizha Live: The Showdown drew about 30,000 people to Merdeka Stadium on 17 January, and that it was the first Indian concert in Malaysia with a full-scale drone show; the duo is Adhi and R Jeeva, and Bernama's report recalls the 2017 film as the one Adhi directed and starred in.

The attachment runs both ways. At a press conference in Kuala Lumpur in July 2024, before an earlier concert, Adhi told Malay Mail that Malaysia was where Tamil hip hop began: "Malaysia is the capital of Tamil Hip Hop." He credited Malaysian acts, Yogi B, Psychomantra, Chakra Sonic and Rabbit Mac among them, and Darkkey's 'Samba Rock', with building an independent Tamil scene before film music took it up. A film about a young man chasing a life in music is playing to an audience that already knows that story.

FST's town cinemas carry as much of it as GSC

The distribution follows the Tamil audience rather than the malls. FST, with 226 sessions at 12 cinemas, carries a little more of it than GSC, with 217 at 14: FST Coliseum and FST Selayang Capitol in Kuala Lumpur, FST PJ State, Metro Plaza and 1 Plaza in Selangor, and FST Butterworth, Prangin Mall, Kampar and Sitiawan in the north each have 20 sessions. TGV has it at 10 cinemas, led by TGV Setiawalk Puchong with 24, and AE Cinemas in Seremban, Melaka and Kerian, Mega in Sungai Petani, Amerin in Seri Kembangan and Blockbuster in Johor Bahru fill in the rest. Selangor alone has 238 of the week's sessions, more than a third, followed by Johor with 101, Kuala Lumpur and Perak with 75 each and Penang with 74.

A 138-minute film is a long evening: a 9pm session ends after 11:15pm, and 27 sessions start after midnight, 17 of them at GSC.
