Onslaught and Fall 2: Deadpoint open across Malaysia this week

One is 900 metres up a plank in Thailand; the other is an 18-rated shoot-out with escaped super-soldiers. Thursday's two openings are thrillers of very different temperatures, and this site's listings for 3 to 9 September have Fall 2: Deadpoint at 81 cinemas with 1,398 sessions, at GSC, TGV, FST, Mega and Paragon, and Onslaught at 75 cinemas with 986 sessions, at GSC, TGV and Paragon. Both opened on 3 September.

Onslaught: 83 per cent, and an 18

Malay Mail reported on 1 September that Adam Wingard's Onslaught was arriving with an 83 per cent Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and described it as a violent, synth-driven action-horror film with grindhouse influences that draws on John Carpenter and classic B-movies. Wingard has said the film is connected to his earlier The Guest (2014) and You're Next (2011), the paper notes, and that it expands the secret military programme those films introduced: the story follows an army sniper protecting her young daughter after genetically engineered super-soldiers escape from a secret facility. The cast, per Malay Mail, is Adria Arjona, Dan Stevens, Eric Wareheim, Reginald VelJohnson, Michael Biehn, Alex Pereira, Drew Starkey and Rebecca Hall. A24 releases it in the United States on 4 September, a day after Malaysia, and Antenna Entertainments distributes it here.

The chains' listings give the Malaysian classification as 18 and the running time as 92 minutes. The 18 matters: it is the only wide release this week with that classification, so it is an adults-only booking, and the chains have given it evening and late sessions rather than matinees, with premium halls including TGV's Beanieplex and Indulge Berex and GSC's Escape Studios.

Fall 2: Deadpoint, 900 metres up

The other opening is a sequel to Fall, the 2022 survival thriller. Free Malaysia Today, which put it first on its September watchlist on 2 September, gives the premise: Jax Hunter, still grieving the sister she lost on that film's radio-tower climb, joins her sister's friend on a trip to Thailand, where a rockslide leaves the pair stranded on a narrow plank more than 900 metres above the ground. The chains' listings have Michael and Peter Spierig directing, Harriet Slater, Arsema Thomas, Tom Brittney and Einar Haraldsson in the cast, a 13 classification and a running time of 98 minutes, and their synopsis puts the climb on Thailand's Mount Kwan. Which one, and where

They are aimed at different rooms. Fall 2 is the wider release and the one a group can see together, at 81 cinemas with a 13 rating; Onslaught is the smaller, harder one, and its 18 will be checked at the door. Both are under 100 minutes, a rarity this month next to the 145-minute films above them in the listings, so a late session on a weeknight still gets you home before midnight.
