Verity release date in Malaysia: the Colleen Hoover thriller opens on 1 October

Verity, the film of Colleen Hoover's bestselling thriller, opens in Malaysia on Thursday 1 October, one day after its worldwide release begins. TGV lists it from that date, and it is one of 14 films the chains have down for that Thursday, alongside the Indonesian remake of Munafik and Tom Cruise's Digger. Its sessions will appear on this site as soon as the chains publish them, usually in the days before opening.

A ghostwriter, a manuscript and a husband

Free Malaysia Today, carrying Reuters' report from the film's London premiere on Thursday, sets out the story. Dakota Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer hired to finish a series of books for the celebrated author Verity Crawford after an accident leaves Verity unable to write. At the Crawfords' secluded estate Lowen finds what appears to be Verity's autobiographical manuscript, and as its secrets come out, the line between truth and deception starts to blur. Anne Hathaway plays Verity and Josh Hartnett her husband, Jeremy.

The Sun, reporting the Malaysian date in May, adds that Nick Antosca wrote the screenplay, that Ismael Cruz Cordova and Brady Wagner are also in the cast, and that the film comes from Amazon MGM Studios. Michael Showalter, the director of The Big Sick, directs. It is the latest of Hoover's novels to reach cinemas after It Ends With Us.

What the cast said at the premiere

Johnson's pitch was short: "It's so thrilling, it's so sexy," she said at the premiere, adding that the audience spends the film trying to work out who is telling the truth and who the good and bad people are, much as in life. Hartnett called it "kind of a choose-your-own-adventure about who is the villain" and said he hoped it would start arguments among the people who see it.

Showalter told the agency that Hoover stayed closely involved throughout, down to a cameo, and that while the film is largely faithful to the novel it leans further into its erotic side. He said he wanted a mainstream film that trusted its audience with uncomfortable ideas.

The detail to check before booking

TGV's page still lists the classification as to be announced, and the running time as blank, which is usual for a title a week out. For a film its own director describes as more erotic than the book, the rating is the thing to look at before planning a night out with anyone under 18; it will appear in this site's listings as soon as the chains carry it.
