Avengers: Endgame returns to Malaysian cinemas on 24 September as Avengers: Endgame Encore

Seven years after it took $2.8 billion, the biggest film Marvel ever made is coming back to the big screen, and Malaysia gets it a day early. Avengers: Endgame Encore is listed on this site for Thursday 24 September at TGV, and GSC's own film page carries the same date; Box Office Mojo's page for the re-release gives Friday 25 September for North America, and Screen Daily's release calendar has Disney opening it in the United Kingdom and Ireland the same Friday.

What the chains' pages say

TGV's page gives the running time as 181 minutes and the classification as 16, with Malay and Chinese subtitles, and carries a warning that the film contains several sequences of flashing lights. GSC's page lists English audio with Malay subtitles, Anthony and Joe Russo as directors, and a cast that runs from Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson through Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Danai Gurira, Benedict Wong, Jon Favreau, Bradley Cooper and Gwyneth Paltrow to Josh Brolin and Tom Holland. Its synopsis is the 2019 one: after the events of Infinity War the universe is in ruins, and the remaining Avengers assemble to reverse what Thanos did.

Neither page explains the word Encore. Box Office Mojo lists the release as a re-release with IMAX and 3D among its formats, and nothing on the chains' pages says whether anything has been added to the film. This site will say so when the chains do, and not before.

The numbers it left behind

Box Office Mojo's page for the original run has the figures the re-release is measured against: $2,799,439,100 worldwide, $858.4 million of it in North America and $1.94 billion international, from an opening weekend of $357,115,007 in 4,662 North American theatres from 26 April 2019. The running time then was listed at 3 hours 1 minute, the same 181 minutes TGV lists now, and Walt Disney Studios distributed it. The Malaysian gross is not broken out on the page.

Why now, from the listings' side

Whatever the studio's reason, the timing here is legible in this site's own data. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with Tom Holland, is still on at 109 Malaysian cinemas in its sixth week, holding the 4DX, Atmos and family halls, so a Marvel audience is already in the building; and the Malaysia Day openings, Resident Evil, Terbang and The Fox King, will be a week old when Endgame arrives on the 24th. A 181-minute film with a 16 classification is an evening's commitment: a 8:30pm session ends around half past eleven, and the IMAX halls, if the chains use them, will be the ones that sell first.

The Avengers: Endgame Encore page carries the date and the chains for now, and will list every cinema and session, with the format of each marked, as the chains publish them about a week before opening.
