Avengers: Endgame Encore showtimes: Infinity Vision at 58 cinemas, with an extra Doomsday preview

Avengers: Endgame Encore is on at more Malaysian cinemas than any other film this week: 125 of them, at 12 of the 13 chains this site follows, with 1,930 sessions in the listings to Wednesday 30 September. Which hall you pick matters more than usual. Marvel says audiences who see the re-release in IMAX or in an Infinity Vision hall get an extra sneak peek at Avengers: Doomsday, and this week's listings mark 953 sessions at 58 cinemas as Infinity Vision and 124 at 15 cinemas as IMAX.

New footage that points at Doomsday

Marvel.com announced the re-release in August with an exclusive look at Avengers: Doomsday, which opens on 18 December, and an additional sneak peek for IMAX and Infinity Vision audiences. In an interview the site published on 24 September, Anthony Russo, who directed both films with his brother Joe, said the Encore's new footage sets up Doomsday directly and adds depth to the Avengers' story without remaking the film: "We weren't going to mess with what that movie is."

Robert Downey Jr., the Tony Stark of Endgame, plays Victor Von Doom in Doomsday, and Russo recalled that Tony's last scene was a pickup shot after the main photography, on the same stage, across from the Paramount lot, where Downey had auditioned for Iron Man. TGV's guide to the re-release, published on 14 September, adds that the Encore has updated colour grading, and reports that the Russos call it required viewing before Doomsday, because the new material bridges the two films.

Infinity Vision is a certificate, not a new projector

GSC's page on it sets out the rules. Infinity Vision certifies premium large-format halls: a screen at least 45 feet wide, immersive sound such as Dolby Atmos or 7.1, and brightness of 14 foot-lamberts in 2D or 6 in 3D. It is not a technology and it does not replace a chain's own hall brands, and ticket prices stay the cinema's to set. Endgame Encore and Doomsday are the first films to play under it, and GSC names 31 of its cinemas as certified, from the two Aurum Theatres at The Exchange TRX and The Gardens Mall to GSC Suria Sabah Mall in Kota Kinabalu and GSC Spring in Bintulu.

953 Infinity Vision sessions, most of them at GSC and TGV

The listings mark 953 of the week's sessions as Infinity Vision, at 58 cinemas. GSC has 566 of them at 31 cinemas, every one on that list, and TGV has 351 at 23, from TGV Toppen in Johor, with 39, to TGV Suria KLCC; Mega lists 30 at Riverfront in Sungai Petani, Megamal Pinang and MesaMall in Nilai, and 10 Star six at Hextar World in Empire City. The single busiest certified cinema is GSC 1 Utama, with 50 sessions, ahead of TGV Toppen and GSC Southkey Mall with 38.

At GSC the certificate comes on top of the hall a ticket already buys: 105 of its Infinity Vision sessions are in its BIG halls, 40 in 4DX, 17 in ScreenX and six in MX4D. The IMAX sessions, 124 of them, are split between six GSC and nine TGV cinemas. Together IMAX and Infinity Vision account for 1,077 of the film's 1,930 sessions this week, so by Marvel's account more than half of the screenings carry the extra preview.

Before you book

TGV rates it 13, with parental guidance advised for anyone younger, and lists it at 185 minutes, in English with Malay and Chinese subtitles; GSC lists 186. When this site first reported the date, in early September, TGV's page showed 181 minutes and a 16. TGV also warns that the film contains several sequences of flashing lights that may affect people with photosensitive epilepsy. At over three hours, a 9pm session ends after midnight. Blockbuster is the only chain of the 13 without it this week.
